On this one we take on the controversial issue of population, with the help of town planner and environmental activist Mark Allen. We discuss population on both a global and national scale, in light of Australia’s population recently reaching 24 million people. This includes addressing some feedback we got (see the comments on this post) on episodes 115 and 116, which focused on progressive parenting. The episode is a continuation from our discussion with Mark from our previous episode, #127, which focused on addressing urban sprawl.

Mark has written about these issues in his article ‘Why The Greens’ Plan For A Liveable Melbourne Will Not Save Melbourne’ and in the zine he has co-written ‘Why We Need to Talk about Population’ – available at New Internationalist bookshop in Melbourne. Mark has also set up the Facebook groups Population, Permaculture and Planning and Sustainable Cruelty-Free Communities.

We’re joined by Malou Logan, vice chairperson of Gabriela Australia, who discusses the campaign to free Mary Jane Veloso. Veloso is a Filipina worker who was arrested and sentenced to death for allegedly smuggling heroin into Indonesia. She has been in Indonesian prison since 2010 and has recently had her execution delayed. Logan makes the case that 5 years in prison is more than enough punishment for Veloso.

This time we take on the lack of funding for services to tackle domestic violence in the federal budget. We’re joined by Jessica Ellen, a law student who has done research into domestic violence and volunteered at community legal centres.

We’re back for a short one where we do a wrap up of the G20 and some of the protests against it. These protests raised issues that were left out of the G20 agenda, which mainly focused on economic growth. We discuss Tony Abbott’s “inspiring” speech, featuring a MLK moment. There’s also a mention of Obama, US imperialism and drones.

There were a number of creative environmental protests during the G20, which was fitting as there was unusually hot weather during the meeting. Protesters buried their heads in the sand to mock the Abbott government’s stance on climate change. The “climate guardians” (pictured above) dressed as angels to raise awareness of the importance of taking action on climate change. We play an interview with one of the climate guardians, Deborah Hart from Climacts. This interview is from Indymedia on RTR92.1FM and she is interviewed by Alex Whisson and Ray Grenfeld.

The episode also features a discussion on some criticisms of the widespread criticism of Russell Brand from mainstream journalists. You can hear further discussion on the G20 and protests against it on our 74th episode.
