We discuss the Biloela family, including Tharunicaa and Kopika picture above, who came to Australia from Sri Lanka due to the persecution of the Tamil people. We also discuss refugee law, as well as the state of the refugee issue and refugee rights activism in Australia.

We finish the episode by promoting the upcoming Rally for Refugee Rights: Permanent Visas not Discrimination. This rally is on the 25th of July around Australia. Here is the Facebook page for the Melbourne event – for those outside of Melbourne, look online to find a rally near you!

This episode features the talk ‘Transgender Awareness and The Law’ by Cassandra Giudice from Transgender Awareness Australia. This talk was recorded at the 2016 Institute for Critical Animal Studies (ICAS Oceania) conference – you can hear all of the talks from this conference here and you can also hear a recap of this conference on episode 152.

We’re also joined by Lara Drew and Dan Kidby from Veganarchy who discuss the upcoming 2017 ICAS Oceania conference, which will be in Melbourne from the 15th-16th of July. Nick is joined by Dr Matthew Rimmer, a Professor in Intellectual Property and Innovation Law, who takes on the Copyright Amendment (Online Infringement) Bill 2015. This proposed Bill has support from both the government and the “opposition” Labor party and it has troubling implications for civil liberties and online freedom. Email Labor politicians to encourage them to oppose the Bill.

During the episode Nick encourages people to sell or give away stuff they’re no longer using for environmental and human rights reasons. He also promotes the new Australian sketch show Open Slather.

Waleed Aly’s call for more money for services to tackle domestic violence reached a lot of people online and through the popular current affairs TV show The Project.

This time we take on the lack of funding for services to tackle domestic violence in the federal budget. We’re joined by Jessica Ellen, a law student who has done research into domestic violence and volunteered at community legal centres.
