We’re joined by Malou Logan, vice chairperson of Gabriela Australia, who discusses the campaign to free Mary Jane Veloso. Veloso is a Filipina worker who was arrested and sentenced to death for allegedly smuggling heroin into Indonesia. She has been in Indonesian prison since 2010 and has recently had her execution delayed. Logan makes the case that 5 years in prison is more than enough punishment for Veloso.

We also discuss the article ‘7 Things People Who Say They’re Fiscally Conservative But Socially Liberal Don’t Understand’ by Greta Christina, welfare and anarchism, and thank Will Potter for promoting our show on his site GreenIsTheNewRed.com.

We finish the episode by going through some listener feedback on episode 97 and making the case for the legalisation of all recreational drugs, considering illegal drugs kill less people (see pic above) and are less harmful (see pic below) than alcohol.

This time we’re joined by Nick’s cousin Emil Raji, who runs Sailboat Records and plays in the band A City Sorrow Built (and others). We discuss the colonial implications of the #boycottBali campaign, which was started in reaction to two Australian citizens, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, being executed in Bali for drug trafficking.

We mention the Australian Federal Police’s role in their execution, a Roy Morgan poll on Australian attitudes towards drug smugglers being executed, and tourism and exploitation. We also question the Australian government’s “concern” over human rights, when it has a horrible human rights record itself, as well as supporting other countries despite their human rights abuses, such as China and Saudi Arabia.

We also look into the racist Reclaim Australia movement and the Rally Against Racism counter-movement, starting with the article ‘Reclaim Australia Accidentally Reclaims 1930s Germany‘ by The Backburner on SBS Comedy. We discuss the article ‘Why Were Most of the Anti-Reclaim Australia Protestors White?’ by Sanmita Verma, protesting and privilege, and the importance of intersectionality and people of colour leading social movements. For more on Reclaim Australia and the Rallies Against Racism, check out episode 94.

Also covered throughout the episode is: why nationalism is ridiculous, as well as racism in the live export campaign and animal advocacy generally. You can hear more on this topic by listening to Javed’s talk ‘Class, Race and Veganism’, which we played on episode 54.

HP meme

This is our meme on representations of mental health in the Harry Potter series – see below for links to share it around on social media.

You can listen to this episode above and subscribe to our podcast on iTunes. You can also listen to this episode on StitcherCyber Ears or download it on Archive.org (60mins, 29MB).

This episode is all about mental health, drawing on Katie’s personal experiences with mental health issues and Nick’s recent mental health first aid course. We dissect arguments against medication for mental health; discuss Harry Potter, The Hunger Games and mental health (you can share our meme on this, pictured above, on Facebook and Twitter); as well as considering how terms like “able-bodied” and “not societally enabled” fit with mental health.

We finish with some recommendations and advice for people with mental health issues, as well as those who want to be allies. These include: seeking help, Mindfulness meditation, doing a mental health first aid course, trying to normalise mental health issues and reduce the stigma, and avoiding ableist language. For more on mental health, check out the Queer Punx’s mental health special.

Also covered on the episode is Nick’s interview with a slaughterhouse worker, media coverage of Islam compared to Christianity, and shout outs to the Species Barrier podcast and Jeremy @CriticalTransit – follow for sustainable transport info!
