We’re joined by Malou Logan, vice chairperson of Gabriela Australia, who discusses the campaign to free Mary Jane Veloso. Veloso is a Filipina worker who was arrested and sentenced to death for allegedly smuggling heroin into Indonesia. She has been in Indonesian prison since 2010 and has recently had her execution delayed. Logan makes the case that 5 years in prison is more than enough punishment for Veloso.

We also discuss the article ‘7 Things People Who Say They’re Fiscally Conservative But Socially Liberal Don’t Understand’ by Greta Christina, welfare and anarchism, and thank Will Potter for promoting our show on his site GreenIsTheNewRed.com.

We finish the episode by going through some listener feedback on episode 97 and making the case for the legalisation of all recreational drugs, considering illegal drugs kill less people (see pic above) and are less harmful (see pic below) than alcohol.

On this episode we’re joined by independent journalist Will Potter from greenisthenewred.com. He discusses: what ‘green is the new red’ refers to (linking the previous “red scare” about communism to the current “green scare” about animal and environmental activists), the way repressive laws target both militant and moderate activists, the ways these laws are creeping into Australia and elsewhere around the world, the power of corporations and their free movement around the world, and coalition building between different social movements united against repressive laws. Will also speaks about his collaboration with Rise Against (as shown above) and the power of punk music in bringing about social change and politicising youth. Also covered is emotional versus physical harm as a result of militant activism and using graphic footage in a way that is consistent with animal liberation – for more on these topics, check out our post-ICAS discussion with Team Earthling.

Some more plugs for Will: buy his book Green is the New Red, check out Team Earthling’s reviews of his book, like Green is the New Red on Facebook, watch his Australian talk, and listen to him being interviewed by our friend Jess from ICAS.

Also covered throughout the episode is: proposed anti-protest laws in Western Australia, the Behind the Mask documentary, our favourite green smoothie recipe and Fox’s Party Rings.

On this episode we take on the rising Islamophobia in Australia. This is partly due to the subjective nature of what is (and isn’t) labelled terrorism, with violence by Islamic people more likely to be labelled as terrorism. We also discuss the role of the media, as well as politicians like Cory Bernardi, Jacqui Lambie and Tony Abbott in adding fuel to the fire of Islamophobia. We play some of the recent Q and A episode on domestic terrorism, featuring Dr Anne-Azza Aly and Randa Abdel-Fattah. Also discussed is Will Potter’s article ‘Tasmania’s “Protection From Protesters” Bill Is As Bad As It Sounds’ – for more on “eco-terrorism” check out Will Potter’s website greenisthenewred.com and follow him on Twitter @will_potter. Other stuff covered on the episode is: comedian Eddie Perfect’s rant that perfectly sums up current political issues in Australia; upcoming protests against Islamophobia in Melbourne and Perth; conspiracy theories, missing weapons of mass destruction and lizard people.
