This episode is about challenging the anti-Islamic, white supremacist movement in Australia, featuring the United Patriots Front and Reclaim Australia.

We play Ray Grenfell’s interview with anti-fascist activist Barry Cade on the Melbourne fascist rally (and anti-fascist counter rally) from the weekend, as well as discussing tactics against fascism. We discuss groups like Reclaim Australia using Muslims and other minorities as scapegoats for the economic inequality caused by neoliberal policies, a hilarious denial of racism from a Reclaim Australia participant and equally hilarious in-fighting amongst white supremacists as a result of the resignation from the United Patriots Front by Sherman Burgess – he has been replaced by the Nazi Blair Cottrell.

On this episode we look into the recent violent attacks in Paris, including the context and the reactions. We discuss: selective grief and outrage, disproportionate media coverage of violent acts, the implications for migrants, and links between the response to the Paris attacks and the response to the 9/11 attacks.

We play two interviews. The first one is Karun Cowper’s interview with US Iraq war veteran Vincent Emanuele on the historical context behind the Paris attacks. We also play Alex Whisson and Ray Grenfell’s interview with Muslim activist Marziya Mohammedali on the Islamophobic backlash following the attacks. The first half of the episode is a critical look at the feminist campaign calling for American singer Chris Brown to be denied entry into Australia because of his conviction for assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Rhianna. We also discuss GetUp! cancelling their campaign against Brown and apologising due to the racist narrative it perpetuated, Maori support for Brown, his (court ordered) involvement with domestic violence intervention services, misogynist lyrics in Brown’s music, his ongoing problematic behaviour that suggests he may not have changed, as well as a more general discussion on whether the feminist movement should ever support restrictions on immigration – not just for Brown but in general (such as against sexist pick up artist Julien Blanc).

In the second half of the episode we discuss some critiques of identity politics, which emphasises the importance of personal experience. We draw on Michael Brull’s article ‘The Debate we have to have: Identity Politics and the Left’ and discuss how identity politics fits with a range of other issues, including intersectionality, same-sex marriage and sex work.
