This episode features an interview with Coggo from Melbourne Street Medic Collective on the recent #FloodTheSystem direct action for climate justice. This was an Australian-wide action and Coggo focuses on the Melbourne action, where activists shut down the entrances to Westpac, BHPBilliton and part of the CBD. You can see videos of the action on the No Frontiers Facebook page and Counteract have done a write-up on the event. In the interview with Coggo, he also discusses critiques of climate marches, Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett says he will only tolerate “passive” protests, the importance of direct action and the need for social movements to always encourage people to do more.

On this episode we’re joined by independent journalist Will Potter from greenisthenewred.com. He discusses: what ‘green is the new red’ refers to (linking the previous “red scare” about communism to the current “green scare” about animal and environmental activists), the way repressive laws target both militant and moderate activists, the ways these laws are creeping into Australia and elsewhere around the world, the power of corporations and their free movement around the world, and coalition building between different social movements united against repressive laws. Will also speaks about his collaboration with Rise Against (as shown above) and the power of punk music in bringing about social change and politicising youth. We’re back for a short one where we do a wrap up of the G20 and some of the protests against it. These protests raised issues that were left out of the G20 agenda, which mainly focused on economic growth. We discuss Tony Abbott’s “inspiring” speech, featuring a MLK moment. There’s also a mention of Obama, US imperialism and drones.

There were a number of creative environmental protests during the G20, which was fitting as there was unusually hot weather during the meeting. Protesters buried their heads in the sand to mock the Abbott government’s stance on climate change. The “climate guardians” (pictured above) dressed as angels to raise awareness of the importance of taking action on climate change. We play an interview with one of the climate guardians, Deborah Hart from Climacts. This interview is from Indymedia on RTR92.1FM and she is interviewed by Alex Whisson and Ray Grenfeld.

The episode also features a discussion on some criticisms of the widespread criticism of Russell Brand from mainstream journalists. You can hear further discussion on the G20 and protests against it on our 74th episode.
