This image was chosen to put into context claims about Australian public transport being overcrowded (a point made during the episode) rather than to feed into the racist narrative that predominantly blames poorer countries for environmental problems. Image from http://www.shareyouressays.com

On this one we take on the controversial issue of population, with the help of town planner and environmental activist Mark Allen. We discuss population on both a global and national scale, in light of Australia’s population recently reaching 24 million people. This includes addressing some feedback we got (see the comments on this post) on episodes 115 and 116, which focused on progressive parenting. The episode is a continuation from our discussion with Mark from our previous episode, #127, which focused on addressing urban sprawl.

Mark has written about these issues in his article ‘Why The Greens’ Plan For A Liveable Melbourne Will Not Save Melbourne’ and in the zine he has co-written ‘Why We Need to Talk about Population’ – available at New Internationalist bookshop in Melbourne. Mark has also set up the Facebook groups Population, Permaculture and Planning and Sustainable Cruelty-Free Communities.

If you’d like to hear other episodes where we have covered population, we spoke about the issue at the end of episodes 15 and 44. It would also be worth checking out episode 10, where we challenged the notion of “legitimate” refugees/migrants, which came up in this episode.

On this episode we look into the recent violent attacks in Paris, including the context and the reactions. We discuss: selective grief and outrage, disproportionate media coverage of violent acts, the implications for migrants, and links between the response to the Paris attacks and the response to the 9/11 attacks.

We play two interviews. The first one is Karun Cowper’s interview with US Iraq war veteran Vincent Emanuele on the historical context behind the Paris attacks. We also play Alex Whisson and Ray Grenfell’s interview with Muslim activist Marziya Mohammedali on the Islamophobic backlash following the attacks. To hear more from Marziya, check out our 70th episode, which features a speech she gave opposing Islamophobia. Both of the interviews played on this episode are from RTR92.1FM Indymedia – you can listen to episodes of this show here and you can listen to individual interviews through perthindymedia.net and Soundcloud.

We also discuss the new show The Verdict and play Katie’s live TV debut – discussing terrorism on the show Opinionated. You can watch her being interviewed from 9.19-14.09 of this video – embedded below.

Katie mentions the PKK during this interview – for more on the PKK and anarchism, gender equality, resistance to ISIS etc, check out our 72nd episode and Crimethinc podcast episodes 36 and 39.

On this episode we discuss themes of refugee rights and animal rights in the Paddington movie. We discuss the article ‘Why the new Paddington movie is really an asylum seeker story’, read a review of the movie from an immigration lawyer, as well as promoting the Free Paddington Facebook page by the Refugee Rights Action Network (RRAN) and the #FreePaddington hashtag. In our discussion on Paddington and animal rights, we encouraged people to watch the video ‘Death Row’, which shows the fear animals face before they are slaughtered, in a non-graphic way.

We have done a few memes relating to the movie, which we encourage people to share around. You can share around our meme on Paddington and refugees (pictured above) on Facebook and Twitter. We also saw a great pro-migrant Paddington meme, which we encourage people to share on Facebook and Twitter. You can also share our meme on the Paddington movie and adopting companion animals on Facebook and Twitter.

We start off the episode by discussing the horrible new laws regarding asylum seekers that our government has introduced (yet again!). For analysis of these laws, check out the Guardian, New Matilda and ChilOut. We also mention the opposition to the new laws from Jacqui Lambie and other Senators.

Other stuff covered is: getting active for refugees, incrementally moving towards a borderless world, Karl Stefanovic becomes a ‘social justice warrior’ and takes down Abbott, the campaign against the East-West Link is successful, and the true meaning of the Washington Redskins.
