Once again Nick is joined by Kim Socha, who is an English professor, grassroots animal liberation activist and author. We discuss sexism in the atheist movement and efforts to challenge it, Rebecca Watson and “ElevatorGate”, focusing on sexism in the West and not just pointing the finger elsewhere, the satirical article ‘Not Without Her Make-Up’, Leila Ahmed on the veil, and criticising discriminatory elements of Islam, while being considerate of the broader context of Western imperialism and Islamophobia – as reflected in attacks such as the Chapel Hill shooting. You can hear more from Kim on episode 87 and we also recommend you listen to her being interviewed on Freedom of Species.

Also covered on the episode is: the 100 year anniversary of Anzac Day, challenging transphobia, the article ‘In Search of Liberal Purity’, Queer Punx Podcast on the importance of trigger warnings and consent, the deadline for papers for the ICAS Oceania conference has been extended, and Nick’s articles ‘Gluten Free Funds Terrorism!!!!’ and ‘When Will Moderate Whites Condemn the NAACP Bombing?’. We also encourage people to check out Which Side podcast, which Nick will be on soon.

This episode is brought to you by “Atheist Angelo”. You can check out his cartoons, which are critical of religion and xenophobia, here. He also recommends people check out talks on transgender murders and sexism in the atheist community – from Skepticon 7. On this episode we discuss terrorism, Islamophobia, free speech and Charlie Hedbo. We discuss the way Rupert Murdoch was mocked by comedian Aziz Ansari and writer JK Rowling (and so many others!) for the anti-Muslim comments he made after the Charlie Hedbo attacks. We also read comedian Aaamer Rahman’s great article ‘Fears escalate as more young Australians enlist in overseas terror campaign’, which flips the roles in discussions around terrorism and who has to condemn it. For more on these issues, check out Nick’s article ‘When Will Moderate Whites Condemn the NAACP Bombing?’.

We also mention Aamer Rahman’s criticisms of Iggy Azalea and have a discussion on her hip hop, analysed through the lens of race, gender and class. Other stuff covered on the episode is: our 2014 Annual WordPress Report, New Internationalist’s 2015 diary, the market vs the environment (in cartoon form!), terrorism and increasing state powers, and criticisms of the I’ll Ride With You campaign.

pick up artist

Cartoon from: http://xkcd.com/1027/

This episode covers the amazing feminist campaign #takedownjulienblanc, which was successful in getting sexist pick up artist Julien Blanc kicked out of Australia. We also discuss how pick up artists contribute to a damaging, sexist culture. We go through Katie’s experiences with male harassment and assault, Australian Immigration Minister Scott Morrison kicks Julien Blanc out of the country while at the same time introducing horrible laws for asylum seekers regarding reporting sexual assault, sexism in the Left, the viral video showing ‘What it’s like to walk around New York as a woman’, pornography, Daisy Coleman’s experiences with victim blaming, musician Conor Oberst files a lawsuit against someone who made sexual assault allegations against him (this lawsuit has since been dropped after the allegation was withdrawn), and the Angry Hippies podcast episode on male aggression. We also mention Lifeline, Beyond Blue and give a disclaimer about the picture we used on our last episode.
