In light of the recent industry-imposed live export (very partial) ban, this episode features the talk ‘An Anarchist Analysis of the Campaign Against Live Animal Export’ by Jess Ison and Nick. In this talk, we critique the campaign based on anarchist, anti-racist and animal liberation perspectives. We are joined by activist-scholars Jess Ison and Adam Cardilini who discuss what The Institute for Critical Animal Studies (Oceania) is all about, the importance of community in activist movements, call in versus call out culture and the upcoming workshop-based discussion forum in Melbourne: Community as Activism – Building Community within the Animal Liberation Movement and Beyond.

We’re joined by activist and academic Jess Ison who discusses her research challenging the use of prisons and other punitive measures as a way to counter animal abuse. More specifically, she covers: the criminalisation of animal activism; queer people, the state and homonormativity; the new show The Break on Netflix; problems with focusing on individual acts of animal cruelty eg to a stingray, cow or kangaroo, while ignoring more institutionalised cruelty on a much bigger scale; the importance of looking into structural explanations for gendered violence rather than just putting “bad apples” in jail, particularly in light of the recent horrific murder of Eurydice Dixon in Melbourne; sex offender registries; transformative justice; and prison abolition. If you’d like to look further into the issues of prisons and prison abolition, Jess recommends the book Are Prisons Obsolete? by Angela Davis.

On this episode, which happens to fall on International Podcast Day, we show how up-to-date we are with current events by discussing writer bell hooks calling Beyonce a terrorist (like 10 years ago). These debates between different waves of feminism are relevant in light of our ongoing discussions about sex work.
