Following on from episode 105, this episode is a further discussion on sex work. We (finally!) go through listener mail on our older sex work episodes – 44 and 64. We investigate the idea of sex work as another form of labour as well as “First World” versus “Third World” sex work. This episode covers the amazing feminist campaign #takedownjulienblanc, which was successful in getting sexist pick up artist Julien Blanc kicked out of Australia. We also discuss how pick up artists contribute to a damaging, sexist culture. We go through Katie’s experiences with male harassment and assault, Australian Immigration Minister Scott Morrison kicks Julien Blanc out of the country while at the same time introducing horrible laws for asylum seekers regarding reporting sexual assault, sexism in the Left, the viral video showing ‘What it’s like to walk around New York as a woman’, pornography, Daisy Coleman’s experiences with victim blaming, musician Conor Oberst files a lawsuit against someone who made sexual assault allegations against him (this lawsuit has since been dropped after the allegation was withdrawn), and the Angry Hippies podcast episode on male aggression. We also mention Lifeline, Beyond Blue and give a disclaimer about the picture we used on our last episode.

This episode covers some of the critiques of the views on porn and sex work that we expressed on our 14^th episode. We cover some different views on these issues from member of the show “Risqué Rhian”, Kathryn, and a staff member at the feminist, queer, eco, mostly vegan sex shop Other Nature. Some of the issues we discuss are: reflecting on radical feminism and third wave feminism, problems with comparing happy animal exploitation and happy porn, whether objectification is inherent to porn, the importance of getting the perspective of sex workers, sex work as another form of labour exploitation under capitalism, and capitalism and patriarchy. We also discuss German “ticket inspectors”, our New Year’s Revolution episode, the ICAS Oceania 2014 conference call for papers, Katy Perry and feminism, Scarlet Road: A Sex Workers Journey, and Date My Pornstar.

We got some feedback on our China episode regarding China’s One Child Policy and we use this to discuss population issues, intersections with male privilege and Crimethinc Ex-Worker podcast on Nazis infiltrating the environmental movement to push for a greater focus on population and reducing migration. Rebecca Doyle tells us about their participation in the Bluestocking week events, foetal homicide laws and the relevance of feminism today. We also speak to Amber Maxwell from Equal Love WA about homophobia from the Australian Christian Lobby, an upcoming rally in Perth for marriage equality and the importance of education in overcoming transphobia and homophobia.
