On this episode we look into the recent violent attacks in Paris, including the context and the reactions. We discuss: selective grief and outrage, disproportionate media coverage of violent acts, the implications for migrants, and links between the response to the Paris attacks and the response to the 9/11 attacks.

We play two interviews. The first one is Karun Cowper’s interview with US Iraq war veteran Vincent Emanuele on the historical context behind the Paris attacks. We also play Alex Whisson and Ray Grenfell’s interview with Muslim activist Marziya Mohammedali on the Islamophobic backlash following the attacks. To hear more from Marziya, check out our 70th episode, which features a speech she gave opposing Islamophobia. Nick is joined by New Matilda journalist Michael Brull, who discusses what has changed and what hasn’t in the government’s new rhetoric around Islam and terrorism, in the wake of the Parramatta shooting. Nick also elaborates on Turnbull’s response to the shooting, analysing this reaction in terms of dominant narratives around terrorism.
