This episode features the talk ‘Transgender Awareness and The Law’ by Cassandra Giudice from Transgender Awareness Australia. We’re also joined by Lara Drew and Dan Kidby from Veganarchy who discuss the upcoming 2017 ICAS Oceania conference, which will be in Melbourne from the 15th-16th of July. There’s also a discussion on 457 visas and a sense of entitlement over “Australian jobs” – reflected in the Labor party’s shocking Australians First ad. On this episode we speak out in defense of Safe Schools, a program designed to increase awareness of queer issues in schools and reduce the bullying faced by queer kids. This program is currently under attack from homophobic, transphobic and all round queerphobic assholes – some of who are politicians such as Senator Cory Bernadi, leading to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull approving an investigation into Safe Schools.

This time Nick is joined by Graeme Bowman, who is performing in the comedy show ‘Patriarchy: Where Would We Be Without You?’ and is co-founder of Wise Women Will Save the World. He discusses the importance of addressing patriarchy and the role of art in bringing about social change. For more about the comedy show on patriarchy, which will be performed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, you can see the blog post, Pozible campaign and Youtube channel for it.

We also play some of Jess Ison’s talk from the Institute for Critical Animal Studies Oceania 2014 conference. This talk looks into links between feminism and concern for animals, analysing writers such as Carol Adams, Breeze Harper and pattrice jones. The talk also covers Carol Adams and transphobia (something we also covered in a discussion we had on Team Earthling podcast), as well as queer and pro-sex worker critiques of second-wave feminism.
