Episode 78: WAR Declared on Racism Worldwide

On this episode we discuss the Aboriginal protests at the G20 Summit in Brisbane, where the Warriors of Resistance (WAR) was introduced. Also at Aboriginal protests during the G20, the Australian flag and effigies of Aboriginal “leaders” labelled as “sell outs” were burnt. We discuss the outrage at the burning of the flag from some white Australians, drawing on a Facebook post from Aboriginal activist Sam Watson, and the way that this anger should be directed towards actual injustice such as Aboriginal deaths in custody and gap in life expectancy compared to the overall Australian averages. We also mention Abbott’s horrible “nothing but bush” comments during the G20, the tokenism of people like Abbott towards Indigenous Australians, and being an ally to Indigenous people. There’s also discussion on police violence against African-American people in the US and solidarity actions in Australia and the UK. We refer to “that hug” in Portland and structural critiques of the police (the problem is bigger than the individual!), anarchist alternatives to the police, and direct action for refugees in Perth (listen to RTR Indymedia’s interview with Victoria Martin – one of the participants in this action – for more on this). This episode features a voicemail from Luc from Team Earthling animal rights podcast, on metadata and new laws restricting privacy rights in Australia. We also rant about the current government, drawing on a newsletter we got from Liberal MP Steve Irons. We take aim at the government’s new policies towards asylum seekers, encourage people to contact Immigration Minister Scott Morrison about them, as well as promoting the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre’s campaigns and information on these issues. Politician Andrew Wilkie has started a campaign of his own – he wants to take the current government to the International Criminal Court over their treatment of asylum seekers.

We close the episode with a discussion on animal rights. This includes talking about some of the problems with eggs (including “humane” eggs), replacing eggs in cooking etc, and recipes for vegan corn fritters and omelettes. There’s also discussion on The Melbourne Cup horse race, a cartoon pointing out the similarities between the horse racing industry and the dairy industry, and Nick’s article linking opposition to the Melbourne Cup to a broader philosophy of animal rights. On this episode we are joined by Naama Blatman-Thomas (a PhD candidate from Israel who has done field work with Palestinian groups in Karmiel) and Mark Thomas (an American activist who has lived in both Israel and Palestine, including spending years in Palestinian refugee camps) for most of this episode. They discuss the recent escalation in Gaza, the Israeli government censoring the fact that the Israeli citizens who were kidnapped were killed right away – in order for anti-Palestinian sentiment to grow, challenge the idea that criticisms of Israel’s human rights abuses are anti-Semitic and cover the broader context behind the recent escalation in Gaza.
