Harley McDonald-Eckersall and Dilan Fernando discuss what you can do to help Palestine, based on conversations they had with Palestinian people on their recent visit to the country. They focus on supporting the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement and correcting myths about Palestine. Check out our last episode #226 to hear more about these myths and responses to them from Dilan and Harley.

Also covered regarding Palestine is: recent bombings, the academic article ‘´Etat de si`ege: A dying domesticating colonialism?’ By Ghassan Hage, John Pilger’s documentary Palestine is still the issue, connections between veganism and the BDS movement as both involve a political consumer boycott, the film clip for the song ‘Close Your Eyes (And Count to F**k)’ that highlights more subtle police racism in the USA, and the Palestine Animal League. You can hear Harley and Dilan discuss the Palestine Animal League and animal advocacy under Occupation in Palestine on Freedom of Species.

Dilan Fernando and Harley McDonald-Eckersall discuss their recent trip to Palestine where they spoke with local activists about life under Occupation and the history of Palestine.

We also cover some recent developments including Netanyahu’s re-election in Israel and the anti-Palestine position of both of the two most popular candidates, plus West Australian Labor candidate Melissa Parke withdrawing her candidacy due to her pro-Palestine, pro-human rights comments being made public.

Nick is joined by “Mother” aka sociologist Dr Theresa Petray for the entire episode. We discuss some of her research on the opportunities and limitations of using the Internet to bring about social change, as well as some of the ways it can be used more effectively by activists.

For more on these issues, check out Theresa’s articles ‘Self-Writing a Movement and Contesting Indigeneity: Being an Aboriginal Activist on Social Media’ and ‘Protest 2.0: Online Interactions and Aboriginal Activists’, her talk ‘The Revolution will not (just) be Tweeted: Social Media and Social Movements’ and her video ‘Slacktivism…or Saving the World?’. See more of Theresa’s publications here and you can also hear her on our 45th episode, discussing Indigenous self-determination.

This episode features an interview with Samah Sabawi, a Palestinian Australian Canadian writer and human rights advocate. She discusses the ongoing oppression Palestinian people face, even when the bombs are not dropping and most of the media is ignoring the issue. To learn more about this topic, she recommends people look into: bdsmovement.net, electronicintifada.net and palestinechronicle.com. You can find out more about the BDS conference she will be speaking about here. You can also listen to our previous episodes on this issue – episodes 16, 62 and 63 and read Nick’s article ‘A Response to Sam Harris Blaming Muslims for the “Careful” and “Compassionate” Killing of Palestinian Civilians’.

Samah Sabawi also leaves us with her powerful poem ‘Red Shirt. Blue Jeans’ (embedded below) about Aylan Kurdi, the Syrian toddler who recently drowned, sparking changing discussions about asylum seekers. We discuss this further, mentioning that the image of this boy and the EU refugee crisis generally have led to very different discussions and policies towards asylum seekers in Australia. We refer to Waleed Aly’s video from The Project on the EU Refugee crisis and we also mention Tad Tietze’s article looking into who is to blame for harsh refugee policies in Australia – politicians or the public? For further analysis of the EU refugee crisis, check out RTRFM Indymedia (7/9/15 episode).
