On this episode Nick looks into the forced closure of Aboriginal communities in Australia. He interviews Bella Bropho about the recent police invasion of the Aboriginal refugee camp at Matagarup in Perth, which is providing a haven for people losing their homes as a result of these closures.

A speech by Damion Hunter [aka King Brown] (embedded below), an actor, rapper, writer and activist, is also featured on the episode – covering the forced closure of Aboriginal communities.

There is also some of Dr Cornel West’s recent talk (embedded below), where he linked the ongoing oppression of Indigenous people in Australia to racism in the United States.

Nick is joined by Kathryn Joy for the whole episode and we discuss Reclaim Australia and the Rally Against Racism counter rallies. Reclaim Australia is an anti-Islamic movement with neo-Nazi links. There is an interview with Ray Grenfell, an anarchist activist and host of RTR92.1FM Indymedia, who discusses his experiences at the Melbourne Rally Against Racism and the importance of directly confronting fascists. Kathryn also discusses the Melbourne rally and Nick discusses his experiences at the Perth Rally Against Racism. We also play a couple of speeches from the Perth rally.

On this episode we discuss the Aboriginal protests at the G20 Summit in Brisbane, where the Warriors of Resistance (WAR) was introduced. Also at Aboriginal protests during the G20, the Australian flag and effigies of Aboriginal “leaders” labelled as “sell outs” were burnt. We discuss the outrage at the burning of the flag from some white Australians, drawing on a Facebook post from Aboriginal activist Sam Watson, and the way that this anger should be directed towards actual injustice such as Aboriginal deaths in custody and gap in life expectancy compared to the overall Australian averages. We also mention Abbott’s horrible “nothing but bush” comments during the G20, the tokenism of people like Abbott towards Indigenous Australians, and being an ally to Indigenous people. There’s also discussion on police violence against African-American people in the US and solidarity actions in Australia and the UK. We refer to “that hug” in Portland and structural critiques of the police (the problem is bigger than the individual!), anarchist alternatives to the police, and direct action for refugees in Perth (listen to RTR Indymedia’s interview with Victoria Martin – one of the participants in this action – for more on this). This time Nick is joined by Coggo from the Melbourne Street Medic Collective (Melb SMC) for the entire episode. Melb SMC and many other groups formed the Wage Peace Convoy that broke the world record for most protests in one day. Unfortunately Guinness refused to include them, maybe because they’re too busy reporting on really important records like the most business leaders attending a networking event. The Wage Peace Convoy did an amazing 29 protests on the day. One of these was with The First Nation people of Australia, where they demanded that those Indigenous people who perished in the Frontier Wars of Australia’s genesis be remembered at the Canberra War Memorial. The other 28 were aimed at those profiting from, and advocating for, war. Nick and Coggo also discuss: the anti-budget protests in Melbourne, updates on the tunnel picket actions for rail not roads, and the impact of the use of horses by police – both on the horses themselves and protesters.
