Nick is joined by New Matilda journalist Michael Brull, who discusses what has changed and what hasn’t in the government’s new rhetoric around Islam and terrorism, in the wake of the Parramatta shooting. See Brull’s article ‘The Parramatta Shooting: New Rhetoric, Same Old Problem?‘ for more on this.

Nick also elaborates on Turnbull’s response to the shooting, analysing this reaction in terms of dominant narratives around terrorism. For more on this, see Nick’s article ‘Malcolm Turnbull Benches Team Australia, But Will The Narrative On Terrorism Change?’ and an interview with Solomon Comissiong on the racial and religious basis for labelling and responding to terrorism, in light of the Charleston shooting (embedded below).

Also covered on the episode is: how the “love it or leave it” mentality that has been promoted in the wake of the Parramatta shooting works against confronting some of the root causes of terrorism – such as Western imperialism and police racism, the US airstrike on a Médecins Sans Frontières hospital in the Afghan city of Kunduz – you can sign an Amnesty International petition calling for an independent investigation into this bombing here, Islamophobia as the latest form of white supremacy in Australia, Scottish National Party (SNP) politician Mhairi Black’s maiden speech to parliament – as a follow-up to our discussions on the SNP in episode 111, and Nick’s article ‘Don’t judge me: Chris Brown and the real task of tackling violence against women’.

This episode features an interview with Samah Sabawi, a Palestinian Australian Canadian writer and human rights advocate. She discusses the ongoing oppression Palestinian people face, even when the bombs are not dropping and most of the media is ignoring the issue. To learn more about this topic, she recommends people look into: bdsmovement.net, electronicintifada.net and palestinechronicle.com. You can find out more about the BDS conference she will be speaking about here. You can also listen to our previous episodes on this issue – episodes 16, 62 and 63 and read Nick’s article ‘A Response to Sam Harris Blaming Muslims for the “Careful” and “Compassionate” Killing of Palestinian Civilians’.

Samah Sabawi also leaves us with her powerful poem ‘Red Shirt. Blue Jeans’ (embedded below) about Aylan Kurdi, the Syrian toddler who recently drowned, sparking changing discussions about asylum seekers. We discuss this further, mentioning that the image of this boy and the EU refugee crisis generally have led to very different discussions and policies towards asylum seekers in Australia. We refer to Waleed Aly’s video from The Project on the EU Refugee crisis and we also mention Tad Tietze’s article looking into who is to blame for harsh refugee policies in Australia – politicians or the public? For further analysis of the EU refugee crisis, check out RTRFM Indymedia (7/9/15 episode).

This is a short one where we give our take on the Sydney Siege and the #illridewithyou campaign. This includes discussion on some of the inaccurate media coverage on the siege and how happy we are to see widespread opposition to the Islamophobic reactions. We also play an interview with counter-terrorism expert Dr Anne-Azza Aly from People Against Violent Extremism. This interview is thanks to Alex Whisson and Perth Indymedia on RTR92.1FM. For more of our coverage opposing Islamophobia, check out our 69th and 70th episodes.
