This episode covers some of the critiques of the views on porn and sex work that we expressed on our 14th episode. We cover some different views on these issues from member of the show “Risqué Rhian”, Kathryn, and a staff member at the feminist, queer, eco, mostly vegan sex shop Other Nature. Some of the issues we discuss are: reflecting on radical feminism and third wave feminism, problems with comparing happy animal exploitation and happy porn, whether objectification is inherent to porn, the importance of getting the perspective of sex workers, sex work as another form of labour exploitation under capitalism, and capitalism and patriarchy. We also discuss German “ticket inspectors”, our New Year’s Revolution episode, the ICAS Oceania 2014 conference call for papers, Katy Perry and feminismScarlet Road: A Sex Workers Journey, and Date My Pornstar.

We got some feedback on our China episode regarding China’s One Child Policy and we use this to discuss population issues, intersections with male privilege and Crimethinc Ex-Worker podcast on Nazis infiltrating the environmental movement to push for a greater focus on population and reducing migration. We encourage people to give us reviews on Stitcher and also check out our episode on marriage and contact us if you’d like to contribute to our upcoming episode on alternative weddings.

We’re back with possibly our most sarcastic episode yet, once again taking aim at the new Abbott government. We talk about some of the scary things Abbott has either introduced or wants to introduce, when it comes to: boycotts, asylum seekers and workers. We also cover Abbott’s new cabinet, looking at the gender disparity which is worse than Zoo magazine and Voldemort’s cabinet, Tony Abbott becomes ‘Prime Minster for Woman’ and gets rid of the Ministry for Science and many other Ministers, as well as adding ‘and Border Protection’ to the ‘Minister for Immigration’. Abbott looks set to sign the TPPA, which will have very scary consequences for Australia and many other countries. To find out more about this agreement, listen to our 18th episode and RTRFM Indymedia (9/9/2013 episode).

We also give a farewell to Kevin Rudd, mention that someone is surprised at what Abbott has done so far, (sexist) shit Abbott says, Team Earthling on the proposed boycott laws, The Unconventionist on Syria, B’s Run for Refugees, further discussion on Syria and US global dominance, consumption on steroids, Abbott ignores asylum seeker deaths, Indonesia publishes transcript of meeting with Julie Bishop, Abbott takes control of Liberal Party interviews, and Scott Ludlam is given a recount for the Western Australian Senate after he was behind by only 14 votes after the initial count. The segment ‘What’s Grinding Our Gears’ is back again – this time it’s sleazy drunk guys and the freeway.

With “snap protests” called all around Australia to take a stand against the Rudd Labor government’s disgraceful new policies towards people coming to Australia by boat, we thought we’d do a “snap podcast” for the same reason. We discuss these new policies, which mean people coming to Australia by boat have no chance of being settled in Australia, and the way in which Rudd has spoken out against this kind of crap in the past. We critique these new policies with the help of a great article by lawyer Julian Burnside and The Human Rights Law Centre. Now asylum seekers arriving in Australia by boat who are found to be “genuine refugees” will be settled in Papua New Guinea. While Rudd tries to paint Papua New Guinea as some kind of paradise, The Guardian and even the Australian government themselves say otherwise. We also discuss the importance of striving to change Australian attitudes on asylum seekers and for true globalisation – the free movement of people around the world. While Rudd’s policies are horrible, it has been great to see protests against this all around Australia, including in Sydney, Melbourne, Townsville and Perth. We bring you some of the speeches from the Perth protest, including Sam Wainwright from the Socialist Alliance (you can see a video of his speech here), Jess McLeod – President of the Curtin University student guild and Victoria Martin-Iverson from the Refugee Rights Action Network. You can see all of our photos from this rally here.

We also have a return of the segment ‘What you HAVEN’T learnt from the media this week’, discussing the media blackout on the Bradley Manning trial and him being accused of “aiding the enemy”. Other topics covered on the episode are: You can now become a member of Progressive Podcast Australia, Tony Abbott apparently doesn’t believe in invisible things, Australia’s peak health body finally recognises that a vegan diet is healthy for all Australians, veganism is more than just a diet, intersectionality in cartoon form, intersectionality and feminism, and intersectionality and “Steve and Lucie’s” Team Earthling animal rights podcast.

In this episode we encourage people to get out of their cars and move to alternative forms of transport like walking, cycling and public transport. Ben Rose, convenor of the Sustainable Transport Coalition of Western Australia, joins us to discuss this, the health benefits of getting out of your car, the alternative transport proposals from the various political parties at the upcoming election in Western Australia and an energy calculator to determine the impact of your car travel. On sustainable transport, we also discuss people overestimating public transport time and underestimating car travel time, financial benefits to moving away from car travel, the Critical Transit sustainable transport podcast, the Greens 2029 Bike Plan for Perth, transport and class issues, as well as mentioning that train use has doubled in Perth in the last 8 years – but car sales have also increased in Australia and particularly Western Australia, and Australian cities remain the most car-dependent outside the United States.

We also give some updates on feminism, the topic of our the last two episodes, including criticisms of One Billion Rising, Derrick Jensen’s CD ‘The Other Side of Darkness’ and progressive stand-up comedy from Tien Tran. Beyond sustainable transport and feminism, we play Nick’s talk on Occupy and Animal Rights from the Occupy Perth event Occupy Cottesloe – you can also listen to the package Nick has put together with a range of performances for the day on the 04/03/2013 episode of RTR 92.1FM Indymedia, we discuss Nick’s interview with Anita Creasey on universities running like businesses and how the Australian elections this year will effect students (from the 25/02/2013 episode of RTR 92.1FM Indymedia), Tame Iti (who we discussed on episode 15) has been released from prison…and has gone vegan?, Anti-Flag’s song to benefit Amnesty International, Team Earthling animal rights podcast, The Species Barrier’s episode on growth and the environment, and Katie rants about refugees and points out that asylum seekers living in the community are 46 times less likely to commit crimes than the general population and 24 times less likely than politicians – despite what Liberal party politician Scott Morrison might say.
