In this episode we give an introduction to the Israel/Palestine conflict, looking at what’s going on right now as well as giving a broader historical perspective. To help us discuss these issues, we are joined by the co-convenors of Friends of Palestine Western Australia, Sarah Haynes and Alex Whisson. Some of the specific topics we cover are: the maps showing Palestinian loss of land, John Pilger’s great documentary ‘Palestine is still the Issue’, Rachel Corrie, Big Brother series one contestant Sara-Marie Fedele’s attempt to solve the conflict, comparisons between Israel and Apartheid South Africa, the boycotts divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement in Australia and beyond, as well as a rally in Perth for Gaza (look online for a rally near you). We also have a return of the segment ‘What you HAVEN’T learnt from the media this week’, with a focus on Israel/Palestine. Beyond this topic, we also cover sustainable transport and Hurricane Sandy, Transgender Awareness Week and Australia’s only active street medic collective: Melbourne FACT.

Episode 15: Rock for Sustainable Capitalism*

In this episode we explore the environmental crisis and the way in which the dominant argument is that we don’t have to worry about other issues like consumption and population, all we have to do is use new technologies, energy efficiency and market-based solutions like the carbon tax. To help us discuss this, we are joined by PhD student Caleb Goods, who is doing his thesis on green jobs and has published the article ‘Labour Unions, the Environment and Green Jobs’. We not only challenge dominant solutions to environmental problems but also offer some of our solutions to reducing consumption including buying second-hand, minimalism and more systemic changes, as well as giving some ways to reduce population including choosing not to reproduce and donating to Pop Offsets.** We also discuss stupid climate change denial billboards, Gina Rinehart and climate change denial in Australia, Occupy Wall Street helping out with Hurricane Sandy, animal agriculture being excluded from the carbon tax, Common Ground Festival, Julia Gillard and uranium mining, the great documentary Operation 8: Deep in the Forrest (see the website october15thsolidarity.info for more info on this case) and we finish with some positive steps that have already been taken to seriously deal with the environmental crisis.

**Update: We finish episode 44 with a critical examination of some population arguments, with a focus on the intersections between population and gender.

In this feminist-themed episode we have two interviews with the Feminist Action Network. Amy Blitvich discusses Australian Prime Minister calling out Opposition leader Tony Abbot’s sexism, the Reclaim the Night march in Perth, and transphobia in the feminist movement. Rebecca Doyle tells us about their participation in the Bluestocking week events, foetal homicide laws and the relevance of feminism today. We also speak to Amber Maxwell from Equal Love WA about homophobia from the Australian Christian Lobby, an upcoming rally in Perth for marriage equality and the importance of education in overcoming transphobia and homophobia. Other issues covered throughout the episode are: moves towards transgender equality in Canada, a voicemail from Jeremy from the podcasts Politicized and Critical Transit, pornography, sex work,* a feminist perspective on the Julian Assange case, a flash mob by Reproductive Choice Australia to end the stigma around abortion, veganism and abortion, #GlobalNOISE in Perth, the Cruelty Free Festival in Perth and the awesome website Who Needs Feminism?.

We begin this episode by discussing the one year anniversary protests by Occupy Wall Street and the police brutality and arbitrary arrests at this event. We also look at some of the achievements of the Occupy movement by discussing the website whatthefuckhasoccupydone.com. There is an interview with artist and activist Carl Scrase, who gives updates on Occupy Melbourne, as well as discussing the #Global Noise event for the Occupy one year anniversary, Real Democracy Australia and the future of the Occupy movement. There is also an update on the new asylum seeker camp on Nauru introduced by the Australian government, a discussion on the project Visibilityfiction.com for teen writers that promotes inclusive young adult fiction, Occupy and animal rights, and puppy slaughter in Australia. We also have a return of the segment ‘What you HAVEN’T learnt from the media this week’.
