On this episode we give some updates on the #LetThemStay campaign, which calls for refugees to remain in Australia rather than being forced into offshore detention. We mainly focus on a recent #LetThemStay banner drop at the Melbourne Art Centre. We play an interview with Gaye Demanuele on this action (embedded below) and Coggo from the Melbourne Street Medics (also embedded below) discusses this action, as well as how the Brisbane health care workers refusing to release babies back to the harm of offshore detention are upholding their duty of care.

Also covered throughout the episode is: the statement from the two activists who did the banner drop, defending the effectiveness of the action despite critiques and shitty media coverage, extending the compassion for children to highlight the problems of ALL mandatory detention and offshore processing, similarly extending concern for a dolphin killed for selfies to more widespread animal abuse, the successful campaign to send child abuse survivors to confront Cardinal Pell and we encourage people to like/follow WACA (Whistleblowers, Activists and Citizens Alliance) on Facebook and Twitter.

This episode features an interview with Coggo from Melbourne Street Medic Collective on the recent #FloodTheSystem direct action for climate justice. This was an Australian-wide action and Coggo focuses on the Melbourne action, where activists shut down the entrances to Westpac, BHPBilliton and part of the CBD. You can see videos of the action on the No Frontiers Facebook page and Counteract have done a write-up on the event. In the interview with Coggo, he also discusses critiques of climate marches, Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett says he will only tolerate “passive” protests, the importance of direct action and the need for social movements to always encourage people to do more.

This time Nick is joined by Coggo from the Melbourne Street Medic Collective (Melb SMC) for the entire episode. Melb SMC and many other groups formed the Wage Peace Convoy that broke the world record for most protests in one day. Unfortunately Guinness refused to include them, maybe because they’re too busy reporting on really important records like the most business leaders attending a networking event. The Wage Peace Convoy did an amazing 29 protests on the day. One of these was with The First Nation people of Australia, where they demanded that those Indigenous people who perished in the Frontier Wars of Australia’s genesis be remembered at the Canberra War Memorial. The other 28 were aimed at those profiting from, and advocating for, war. Nick and Coggo also discuss: the anti-budget protests in Melbourne, updates on the tunnel picket actions for rail not roads, and the impact of the use of horses by police – both on the horses themselves and protesters.
