This episode covers Idle No More – the exciting new movement for Indigenous sovereignty and the environment. We cover the beginnings of the movement, Democracy Now!’s coverage, Idle No More and anti-consumerism, Chief Theresa Spence’s hunger strike, flash mobs including one in North Bay, Ontario – you can watch this one here (short version) or here (long version), comparisons with the Occupy movement, and the movement spreading around the world – including Alaska (U.S.A.). We play an awesome voicemail from Jon who discusses links between the Idle No More movement and Indigenous protests in Aotearoa (New Zealand) – where he’s from, who gets to define Indigenous and a shared history of oppression amongst Indigenous people all around the world. See below under ‘Clips’ for more sources from Jon on Idle No More and Indigenous issues generally.

This episode gives some political new year’s resolutions. The “new year’s revolutions” we promote are: 1. Challenge full-time work to allow more time for other things like art and activism. We have an interview with Boudicca Cerese from CSG Free Northern Rivers on the issue of coal seam gas mining and ongoing protests in New South Wales, Australia. 2. Play KillCapcombining gaming and activism – from Adbusters. 3. Go Vegan for reasons such as the complex lives of farm animals and opposing animal slaughter. We also encourage people who are already vegan to do vegan mentoring and change to Cruelty Free Super. 4. Move away from car use. 5. Buy less shit. 6. Question capitalism and think about alternatives – check out the website Audio for a Revolution for heaps of anti-capitalist sources.

We also cover: the article In Defense of New Year’s Resolutions, B’s really nice review of our podcast, supposed “terrorist” Tame Iti paints the front cover of New Zealand Geographic, E-readers and government snooping, Zenhabits.net and Feminist Disney.

This episode covers the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA), which is a corporate power tool of the 1% that has problems such as secrecy and a lack of transparency, and has also been linked to U.S. interests. On this show we have a great interview with journalist, lawyer and activist Edward Miller live from a rally against the TPPA in Aotearoa (New Zealand), where the TPPA negotiations are taking place. Unfortunately there was police brutality at this rally – see here for an update on this brutality that we didn’t cover on the show. We also discuss free movement for money rather than people and neoliberal globalisation generally. There is some discussion on environmental issues including: 4 degrees of global warming, art for the environment, buying junk at Christmas time, the environmental impact of internet use, ecosearch.org, envirosearch.org and The Species Barrier podcast. Other issues covered are the social benefits of libraries (email the author at rwil2924@uni.sydney.edu.au for a copy of this article), speciesism, Caitlin Moran’s idiotic comment and intersectionality (this time on the links between different forms of oppression amongst humans).
