This episode is a feminism burger (hold the men), featuring Katie and Kathryn Joy. It covers: some feedback on our 89th episode, men and feminism (see articles by Clementine Ford and Ruby Hamad for more on this), and “the monster myth” about men who commit gendered violence. Katie and Kathryn’s feminist-themed discussion continues on episode 96.

bigot tears

This placard from the Perth Rally Against Racism was created by @KyeRussell on Twitter. See links below to share it around on Facebook and Twitter.

Nick is joined by Kathryn Joy for the whole episode and we discuss Reclaim Australia and the Rally Against Racism counter rallies. Reclaim Australia is an anti-Islamic movement with neo-Nazi links. There is an interview with Ray Grenfell, an anarchist activist and host of RTR92.1FM Indymedia, who discusses his experiences at the Melbourne Rally Against Racism and the importance of directly confronting fascists. Kathryn also discusses the Melbourne rally and Nick discusses his experiences at the Perth Rally Against Racism. We also play a couple of speeches from the Perth rally.

Other stuff covered on the episode is: bullshit claims from Reclaim Australia about “Halal funds terrorism” and the “threat” of Sharia Law, Crimethinc and Queer Punx on anti-fascist action, militant anti-fascism and gender, spectacle and protest, diversity of tactics, #ReclaimJeremy, Anarchist Affinity’s guide to being safe and effective against Reclaim Australia, and Indigenous resistance to Reclaim Australia.

You can share around the above pic of the boycott water placard on Facebook and Twitter. Also check out and share around our memes on Reclaim Australia and: Indigenous Australians (Facebook, Twitter), racism (Facebook, Twitter), neo-Nazi links (Facebook, Twitter), apples are Halal (Facebook, Twitter), and oxygen is Halal (Facebook, Twitter). For more on opposing Islamophobia, check out our 70th episode. To hear more from Kathryn, you can listen to her talk on the place of animals in social work, which was played on Team Earthling.

On this episode we play our talk ‘Intersectionality in Practice’, where we discuss our efforts to promote an intersectional approach to animal advocacy with Animal Rights Advocates (ARA). You can view the powerpoint presentation for this talk here. This talk is from the last Institute for Critical Animal Studies Oceania (ICAS) conference – you can listen to more talks from this conference on episode 54. You can also hear Nick’s talk on live export from this conference, which was played on Team Earthling and Freedom of Species. Also check out the upcoming ICAS Oceania conference in Melbourne.

We also discuss our efforts to bring an intersectional animal rights message to the March Australia movement against the Abbott government. You can read ARA’s statement in support of the March Australia movement here. Also covered on the episode is a lack of intersectionality in Patricia Arquette’s comments on feminism at the Oscars.

This episode is brought to you by Emily (“I can’t believe we’ve actually got a listener in Perth!”). Check out the website veganperth.org.au, which Emily has done a lot of work on. Thanks a lot to Emily for becoming a member of our show – you can become a member and sponsor an episode too.
