In this episode, which marks two years of our podcast, we bring you some of the event What Next for the Australian Left? featuring Antony Loewenstein and Scott Ludlam. @antloewenstein is a Sydney-based independent freelance journalist, author, documentarian, photographer and blogger. @SenatorLudlam is a Greens Senator in Western Australia (for now at least – you can find out the latest on the WA Senate recount here). At this event, Loewenstein discussed issues like insiders and outsiders in the media, the privatisation of refugee detention centres, activism against privatisation, changing the language in the media and academics. Ludlam discussed capitalism as cancer, the media’s role in Abbott’s victory and the importance of activism beyond parliament. You can watch this whole event on Youtube here.

Beyond this event we also talk about some of our finds from the street, including a lamp and Katie living the dream and getting an iMac without giving any money to Apple! For those looking for free stuff in Melbourne, check out Give Away Free Stuff in Melbourne. We discuss Russell Brand’s viral interview, feminist critiquesBrand checks himself and voting. For those wanting to look further into the issue of privilege, check out The Angry Hippie’s podcast. We promote a video on the #tunnelpicket campaign and read out an update on this campaign from Melbourne Street Medic Collective. Also covered is our vegan outreach at the National Day of Climate Action and the progress on the Coalition repealing the carbon tax. To find out about the environmental impact of animal products check out shrinkthatfootprint.com and our 11th episode. For more on the carbon tax, including critiques from Friends of the Earth, listen to our 5th episode. We promote the 104th episode of Team Earthling, which has a great talk from Naty on building bridges between different progressive social movements. We encourage people to share Nick’s meme ‘Budgie smugglers are a bigger threat than people smugglers’. The episode finishes with a discussion on Israel, including Katie’s experiences of being at the UN for Israel’s Universal Periodic Review, Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and racism in Israel. We’re back with possibly our most sarcastic episode yet, once again taking aim at the new Abbott government. We talk about some of the scary things Abbott has either introduced or wants to introduce, when it comes to: boycotts, asylum seekers and workers. We also cover Abbott’s new cabinet, looking at the gender disparity which is worse than Zoo magazine and Voldemort’s cabinet, Tony Abbott becomes ‘Prime Minster for Woman’ and gets rid of the Ministry for Science and many other Ministers, as well as adding ‘and Border Protection’ to the ‘Minister for Immigration’. Abbott looks set to sign the TPPA, which will have very scary consequences for Australia and many other countries. To find out more about this agreement, listen to our 18th episode and RTRFM Indymedia (9/9/2013 episode).

We also give a farewell to Kevin Rudd, mention that someone is surprised at what Abbott has done so far, (sexist) shit Abbott says, Team Earthling on the proposed boycott laws, The Unconventionist on Syria, B’s Run for Refugees, further discussion on Syria and US global dominance, consumption on steroids, Abbott ignores asylum seeker deaths, Indonesia publishes transcript of meeting with Julie Bishop, Abbott takes control of Liberal Party interviews, and Scott Ludlam is given a recount for the Western Australian Senate after he was behind by only 14 votes after the initial count. The segment ‘What’s Grinding Our Gears’ is back again – this time it’s sleazy drunk guys and the freeway.

We’re back and once again we take aim at a nationalistic celebration – this time we set our sights on Anzac Day – a day where Australians celebrate soldiers running into machine gun fire for the sake of Western imperialism. To help us move beyond the simplistic slogans we hear around Anzac Day, Ederm Koc joins us. He is a journalist and journalism lecturer at La Trobe Uni, as well as editor of Upstart Magazine. We encourage people to read his great article on Anzac Day, ‘Anzac Debate Marches Down Wrong Track’. We also discuss conservative politician Steve Irons’ pamphlet on Anzac Day, Ruby Murray’s article ‘The false nationalism of Anzac Day and football’, Indigenous Australians being excluded in discussions about war, militarism and sport, neoliberalism and “corporate wars”, anti-war activism, the documentary The Weather Underground, and 10 Excellent Reasons Not to Join the Military.

We also cover minimalism and sustainability, good news for abortion rights in France, Derren Brown’s psychology, the death of former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Chumbawamba’s CD, as well as comments from Billy Bragg and Australian human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson on Thatcher’s death.
