Sick of hearing about President Trump? Us too…so here is some more Trump coverage! We discuss the election result and the importance of the Left moving beyond ‘progressivism of the rich’.

To analyse the election and the fall-out, we draw on Naomi Klein, Thomas Frank, Bernie Sanders and Russell Brand.

There’s a discussion of left-wing critiques of identity politics and an anarchist defence of identity politics – thanks to Rebecca from Anarchist Affinity. For more on identity politics, check out our 117th episode.

There’s also a breakdown of who voted for which party based on race, income etc.

Nick is back with one final episode on the US election, featuring some listener feedback on our last two episodes (#146 and #147) on this topic. Jeremy Mendelson @CriticalTransit makes the case for why he is not voting for Clinton and the importance of voting for third parties like the Greens.

There is also some discussion on Trump, class and the urban/rural divide in the US. For more on this, check out Cracked podcast, Jimmy Dore and Chomsky on the impact of NAFTA (Trump opposes this free trade agreement).

*Despite the title of the above video (and the photoshopped hat!), Moore is NOT voting for Trump!

The episode also features a new segment ‘Angela Davis ALWAYS Makes Sense’.

There has also been yet another horrible new policy by the Australian government towards asylum seekers. For more on this, like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter @ProgPodcast – Katie has been posting a lot about this on there.

We are again joined by politics professor Jason Brownlee. This is a continuation of our discussion with Jason from last episode (#142), where he introduced Peter Singer’s work on effective altruism and discussed some of the positive aspects. On this episode Jason discusses some critiques of Singer’s effective altruism, focusing mainly on a failure to address the structural causes of poverty, such as capitalism and neoliberal institutions like the International Monetary Fund.

This episode features Nick’s talk ‘Veganarchism’, which explores some links between veganism and anarchism. You can view the PowerPoint for this talk here and it is also embedded below. You can also listen to the full talk and the Q and A after it here. This talk was recorded at the most recent Institute for Critical Animal Studies (Oceania) conference – you can hear other talks from this conference here. For more on veganarchism, see (for example) the pamphlet ‘Veganarchism’, the books Making a Killing and Anarchism and Animal Liberation, and Anthony Nocella’s work.

We also discuss Katie’s articles on the baby boomers and Game of Thrones (follow our blog at progressivepostings.wordpress.com to get email updates on the articles we post there), and Nick being an anarchist “since before pre-K”.
