Nick is joined by environmental activist Mark Allen from the 3CR radio show City Limits. We discuss some tensions between animal rights, which values individual animals, and conservation, which values ecosystems and environments as a whole. More specifically, we discuss whether possums should be released from captivity into the wild if they almost certainly won’t survive; Oscar Horta’s hypothetical ‘The fox, the rabbit and the vegan food rations’; and Sydney Fox Rescue. There is also a return of the segment ‘When Karl Pilkington Makes Sense’ – this time on interfering in nature to help individual animals.

The episode also features Nick’s talk ‘Cowspiracies about Meat Eating Environmentalists, A Critical Examination of the Environmental Vegan Movement’. You can view the PowerPoint for this talk here and it is also embedded below. This talk was recorded at the most recent Institute for Critical Animal Studies (ICAS) conference – you can find links to all of the talks from this conference in the show notes of episode 152.

Also covered throughout the episode is: the importance of taking the climate emergency seriously; you know things are bad when the Doomsday Vault is being compromised by climate change; and Doomsday Prep for the Super-Rich – covered on Cracked podcast and by The New Yorker.

We finish the episode by touching on the importance of the animal advocacy movement acknowledging and addressing the ongoing discrimination people face.

A common message in the animal advocacy movement – ignoring the fact that people continue to face racism, sexism and homophobia!

Book Recommendation:

Impact of Meat Consumption on Health and Environmental Sustainability edited by Talia Raphaely and Dora Marinova. Nick has a chapter in this book called ‘Environmental Concerns and the Mainstreaming of Veganism’. For more information about the book and some photos from the launch, see here.

This episode features the talk ‘Transgender Awareness and The Law’ by Cassandra Giudice from Transgender Awareness Australia. This talk was recorded at the 2016 Institute for Critical Animal Studies (ICAS Oceania) conference – you can hear all of the talks from this conference here and you can also hear a recap of this conference on episode 152.

We’re also joined by Lara Drew and Dan Kidby from Veganarchy who discuss the upcoming 2017 ICAS Oceania conference, which will be in Melbourne from the 15th-16th of July. You can hear them discuss their article ‘The lines are being drawn, the case for a divided animal movement’ on our last episode, #169.

There’s also a discussion on 457 visas and a sense of entitlement over “Australian jobs” – reflected in the Labor party’s shocking Australians First ad. Along similar lines but in a US context, sociologist Michael Kimmel links Donald Trump’s success to white male rage and a sense of entitlement over “our jobs”.

On this episode we have some back-up from scholarly sources, as well as from Adam Cardilini, who is a scientist, animal advocate and co-host of Vegansci podcast. He discusses some listener feedback on episode 156, covering topics such as new animal-free alternatives, capitalism, effective animal activism, the methodology of the former vegetarian and vegan study by Faunalytics, veganism and B12, using a Fox News level of objectivity and finding the magical vegan dumpling.

We also have a brief discussion about the Invasion Day rally in Melbourne. You can listen to our audio recordings of all of the talks from that event here.

In the second half of the episode we ask Adam some further questions about his talk ‘Diversity in animal activism: Preparing for impact opportunities for the next 10 years’, which we played on episode 156. These questions are on issues such as lab-grown meat, GMOs, technology and the vegan movement. You can listen to the Q and A after Adam’s talk here.

Katie and Nick finish up the episode with a discussion on mental health medication, animal testing and veganism. For more on this topic, check out Katie’s ICAS talk (which we played on episode 131) and for more on mental health medication generally, listen in to our 92nd episode.

Nick and Adam also discuss effective animal activism and question whether the evidence actually suggests animal advocates should avoid promoting veganism. In this discussion we cover Faunalytics recommendations for activism based on their study on former vegetarians and vegans. We point to other research suggesting that people who became vegetarian for ethical reasons and specifically for animal rights reasons were more likely to stay vegetarian than those who made the decision based on other reasons, such as concern for their health. We also mention the study ‘A Pound of Flesh’ and give a “public health announcement” regarding the importance of B12 for vegans.
