We’re joined by awesome independent journalist Antony Loewenstein (@antloewenstein). He discusses Australian troops set to enter Iraq and Syria, his article ‘Of course Australia is going back to Iraq: That’s how a US client is expected to behave’, hysteria about terrorism in Australia and the poor state of (most of) the Australian media. You can hear more from Antony Loewenstein on our 41st episode.

We also draw on The Hunger Games to question whether this truly is a “humanitarian” mission, especially after Australia recently cut all foreign aid to Iraq. We discuss the reactions to the military intervention from different states at the UN security council and the need for UN reform. We also analyse whether the proposed air strikes are terrorism, according to s1 of the UK Terrorism Act.

Other issues covered on the episode are: Thai people read George Orwell’s book 1984 in public (as a form of protest against the dictatorship), “biological” sex as a social construct, and another direct action in Melbourne – this time activists take on Lockheed Martin. You can hear more about direct action on our 65th episode.

We’re joined by Jen Perry, one of the main organisers of the Cruelty Free Festival WA, for this entire episode. We discuss this festival and how it puts into practice our support for intersectionality – bringing together a wide range of human rights, environmental and animal rights causes. We also discuss the recent protests against shark culling and linking opposition to the shark cull to a broader animal rights philosophy, The Sistah Vegan Project, avoiding gender stereotypes when discussing attitudes towards animals (Jen is no “cow hugger”!), critiques of term ‘cruelty-free’, and why all progressives should go to Berlin and the ICAS Oceania conference. To find out more about the Cruelty Free Festival, you can read an interview with Jen about the festival on Viva la Vegan! and you can also hear Nick discuss the festival on Team Earthling.

In this one we discuss our experiences at our local One Billion Rising event – we promoted this global event on our last episode. We bring you some of the talks from this event, including Lesley Kirkwood – Managing Solicitor of The Women’s Law Centre of WA and Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren. We reflect on the intersectional nature of the event, the importance of trigger warnings and a flyer we got at the event – 10 Things Men can do to Prevent Gender Violence. We use this flyer to discuss how to be a good feminist ally (and how to be a good ally of any cause where you are not part of the oppressed group). We start off the episode with our latest ‘Find from the street’ and we also speak out against slut shaming, discuss some feedback on our show, and mention the TV show What Would You Do and the Indymedia radio show that we sometimes co-host, which you can subscribe to on iTunes.

This episode has been released in two parts. You can listen to both parts of this episode and subscribe to our podcast on iTunes here and you can also listen to both parts on Cyber Ears here. You can also download part 1 on Archive.org here (58MB) and part 2 on Media Fire here (49MB).

On part one of this episode we are joined by Kirsten Bayes from Stop the Arms Fair! who discusses Occupy vs the Arms Fair (September 8th in London), Australians stopping arms fairs, how you can take action against arms dealers regardless of where in the world you live, queer issues and arms dealers, and animals and war. We also introduce the new segment ‘What you HAVE learnt from Adbusters this week’, discussing issue 109 which has articles on planned obsolescence and riding bikes. In this segment we talk about Jeremy’s finds from the streetbike traffic jams in London, and gender and cycling, drawing on an article by Stevie from Team Earthling and a Critical Transit episode. We also talk about sex toys and light globes (which is more exciting?) and the importance of reading.

We finish part two of the episode by discussing the role of soldiers in war, drawing on the book 10 Excellent Reasons Not to Join the Military. Before this, we take an in-depth look into Chelsea Manning’s (formerly Bradley Manning) coming out as trans and imprisonment. In this discussion we cover using the correct pronouns to refer to her, Andrew Bolt being an asshole, writing letters to Chelsea, being trans in prison, how to be a trans ally, a great flyer on combating hate crimes from Camden LGBT Forum and staying safe without police.

Other topics covered in part two of the episode include: Silent Raging blog and podcast, visiting the Ecuadorian embassy where Assange is, Glenn Greenwald’s partner David Miranda detained to intimidate journalists, the Propaganda exhibition in London, The Book of Mormon, Eric McElroy’s comedy, Australia has committed 143 violations of international law, refugee rights rallies in Melbourne and elsewhere around Australia, the book Walden Two, vegan restaurants in London – including Loving Hut Camden, Manna Cuisine and 222 Veggie Vegan – see Happy Cow to find vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants all around the world – anything can be vegan!
