‘What’s Grinding Our Gears This Week’ is the cuts to Centrelink from the conservative Abbott government currently in power in Australia. We talk about our own experiences with Centrelink, the Liberal party getting policy advice on welfare from super-rich mining magnate Gina Rinehart, Tony Abbott wanting to ban the dole for people under 30 and we defend welfare against criticisms from some anarchists, drawing on anarchist Noam Chomsky. We also discuss some important critiques of the One Billion Rising movement, the global feminist movement that we covered on episodes 46 and 47.

In this one we discuss our experiences at our local One Billion Rising event – we promoted this global event on our last episode. We bring you some of the talks from this event, including Lesley Kirkwood – Managing Solicitor of The Women’s Law Centre of WA and Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren. We reflect on the intersectional nature of the event, the importance of trigger warnings and a flyer we got at the event – 10 Things Men can do to Prevent Gender Violence. We use this flyer to discuss how to be a good feminist ally (and how to be a good ally of any cause where you are not part of the oppressed group). We start off the episode with our latest ‘Find from the street’ and we also speak out against slut shaming, discuss some feedback on our show, and mention the TV show What Would You Do and the Indymedia radio show that we sometimes co-host, which you can subscribe to on iTunes.

In this one Nick is flying (Han) solo, or at least without Katie. He is joined by Nicole, one of the organisers from the Perth One Billion Rising event, for the entire episode. One Billion Rising is a global event that aims to have ‘one billion women releasing their stories, dancing and speaking at the places where they need justice, where they need an end to violence against women and girls’. You can find your closest One Billion Rising event here.

This episode covers a lack of media attention given to these issues, a discussion on some criticisms of the One Billion Rising movement, this year’s focus on Indigenous and disabled victims of violence, art and social change, slut shaming, rape culture, why the Perth event is open to everyone and has all vegan food, Reclaim the Night, and the movement against female genital mutilation. You can hear our episode that covered last year’s One Billion Rising event here.

Update: we discuss some of our experiences at our local One Billion Rising event and play some talks from it on our 47th episode.

This episode covers the One Billion Rising event, which encourages people to: ‘STRIKE, DANCE, RISE in your community & Demand an end to violence’. To help us discuss this, we are joined by feminist activist Elena Trethowan, who is helping to organise One Billion Rising events. For an event near you, see here and for those in Australia, you can also view the One Billion Rising Australia Facebook page. Before we get onto this event, we discuss some other feminist-related issues, including a feminist-themed ‘What you HAVEN’T learnt from the media this week’, how men also suffer from gender roles, “nice” guys, comedian Jamie Kilstein’s opposition to rape culture in stand-up comedy (see from 1.44.10 onwards of this video) and the tables turning on “slut shamers”.

Other topics beyond feminism that we cover are: Ruth DeSouza’s account of her first Invasion Day, Australian opposition leader Tony Abbott “cashing in” on natural disasters, Chief Theresa Spence from the Idle No More movement ends her hunger strike, John Pilger’s videos, the website Our Vegan Pregnancy, Avenue magazine, and being concerned about ALL forms of oppression rather than being “single-issue”.
