This time we’re joined by town planner and environmental activist Mark Allen to discuss the issue of urban sprawl, where urban development takes over previously undeveloped areas. This has a variety of negative impacts, including on humans, other animals and the environment as a whole.

Mark advocates an alternative approach to planning, including urban villages and cohousing as responses to these problems. He also argues that high rise is not the (only) response required to address urban sprawl.

Nick is joined by Sarah Ross from the Refugee Rights Action Network and Kaliyugan Pathmanathan, Project Coordinator of Tamil Eelam Cricket. Cali had to leave Sri Lanka as a refugee to Australia himself and he co-founded this project in order to create a platform for the Tamil diaspora around the world to participate in national and international cricket competitions and also to bridge the gap between newly arrived Tamils in the local community and the pre-existing Tamil community.

We also discuss the importance of the voices of refugees in the movement for refugees, strategies for effective refugee activism and who is to blame for harsh policies towards asylum seekers?

Cali and Sarah also give some critiques of the counter movement against Reclaim Australia. This episode features an interview with Coggo from Melbourne Street Medic Collective on the recent #FloodTheSystem direct action for climate justice. This was an Australian-wide action and Coggo focuses on the Melbourne action, where activists shut down the entrances to Westpac, BHPBilliton and part of the CBD. You can see videos of the action on the No Frontiers Facebook page and Counteract have done a write-up on the event. In the interview with Coggo, he also discusses critiques of climate marches, Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett says he will only tolerate “passive” protests, the importance of direct action and the need for social movements to always encourage people to do more.

Nick is joined by Dr Matthew Rimmer, a Professor in Intellectual Property and Innovation Law, who takes on the Copyright Amendment (Online Infringement) Bill 2015. This proposed Bill has support from both the government and the “opposition” Labor party and it has troubling implications for civil liberties and online freedom. Email Labor politicians to encourage them to oppose the Bill.

During the episode Nick encourages people to sell or give away stuff they’re no longer using for environmental and human rights reasons. He also promotes the new Australian sketch show Open Slather.
