On this episode we discuss Nick’s trip to our friendly neighbourhood brothel and reflect on our evolving views on sex work generally.

For more on sex work, you can listen to our previous episodes on the topic here (we’d particular recommend our interview with Jane Green and Cameron Cox, who are both sex workers). We also recommend the show You Can’t Ask That: Sex Workers and the article ‘Let’s not abolish sex work. Let’s abolish all work’.

Nick recently attended the ‘Development for Species: Animals in society, animals as society’ conference. You can listen to Nick’s talk from this conference: ‘Intersectionality, Integrationist Social Change and PETA’s Animal Advocacy’ – audio, PowerPoint.

On the episode we also read some of an article from the Chaser Quarterly on male feminists.

Amnesty International has recently announced that decriminalisation is their official human rights policy on sex work – they explain why here. We discuss this development, partially drawing on and critiquing an episode of ‘The Minefield’ on ABC radio.

Some of the points we cover are: decriminalisation is for sex workers NOT for sex buyers, sex work as work, “First World” versus “Third World” sex work, and sex work and capitalism.

This episode features an interview with Jane Green and Cameron Cox. Jane Green is a sex worker who is on the Executive Committee of the Scarlet Alliance and Cameron Cox is a sex worker who is involved in a sex worker outreach organisation. They discuss: the links between homophobia and whorephobia, sex work as work, why they are #NotYourRescueProject, Amnesty International’s AGM where different approaches to sex work were debated, and they make the case that decriminalisation is the model that leads to the best outcomes for sex workers.

You can hear part 1 of our interview with Jane and Cameron on episode 64 (sorry for the delay!). Also be sure to follow Cameron on Twitter @CamCoxSyd and check out Jane’s website Sexliesductape.me, follow her on Twitter @Sexliesductape and read her Guardian article ‘Listen to Sex Workers – You’ll Realise we have a lot to say about Labour Rights’.
