On this episode we’re joined by independent journalist Will Potter from greenisthenewred.com. He discusses: what ‘green is the new red’ refers to (linking the previous “red scare” about communism to the current “green scare” about animal and environmental activists), the way repressive laws target both militant and moderate activists, the ways these laws are creeping into Australia and elsewhere around the world, the power of corporations and their free movement around the world, and coalition building between different social movements united against repressive laws. Will also speaks about his collaboration with Rise Against (as shown above) and the power of punk music in bringing about social change and politicising youth. This episode features a voicemail from Luc from Team Earthling animal rights podcast, on metadata and new laws restricting privacy rights in Australia. We also rant about the current government, drawing on a newsletter we got from Liberal MP Steve Irons. We take aim at the government’s new policies towards asylum seekers, encourage people to contact Immigration Minister Scott Morrison about them, as well as promoting the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre’s campaigns and information on these issues. Politician Andrew Wilkie has started a campaign of his own – he wants to take the current government to the International Criminal Court over their treatment of asylum seekers.

We close the episode with a discussion on animal rights. This includes talking about some of the problems with eggs (including “humane” eggs), replacing eggs in cooking etc, and recipes for vegan corn fritters and omelettes. There’s also discussion on The Melbourne Cup horse race, a cartoon pointing out the similarities between the horse racing industry and the dairy industry, and Nick’s article linking opposition to the Melbourne Cup to a broader philosophy of animal rights. Episode 74: Enjoy the G20, Leave Your Kayak at Home

If you were planning on kayaking through the streets of Brisbane this week, you’re out of luck. Kayaks are one of the things that are banned in central Brisbane during the G20.

This time we take aim at the agenda of the Brisbane G20 Summit of world leaders and discuss some of the protests against it. We play an interview with Robin Taubenfeld of BrisCAN-G20 on their Peoples Convergence and march opposing the G20. Robin is interviewed by Karun Cowper from Indymedia on RTR92.1FM. If you’d like to get involved in G20 protests and alternative events, including attending/volunteering/donating, go to briscan.net.au.

We also discuss the police state measures introduced for the meeting, including additional police with extra powers (that threaten the right to protest and have been justified partly due to concerns about terrorism), Big Brother-like surveillance technology in place, and some bizarre banned items. To find out more about the additional police powers during the G20, you can listen to this episode of the Radio National show Big Ideas. We also go through the first G20-related arrest and protest, billboards from activist groups being banned (you can sign a GetUp! petition against this) and a farmer resorting to using his own field for his pro-environment message for the G20, Amnesty’s petition pushing for a greater focus on combating ebola at the meeting, and vegan omelettes.
