Nick is joined by Aaron from End Queer Lockdown on Manus Island for the entire episode. We discuss the intersections between queer and refugee issues, with the Australian government’s policies such as “offshore processing” of asylum seekers harming refugees as a whole, but queer refugees in particular. We also read a letter from a queer refugee, discuss refugee activism and the importance of individual stories in changing attitudes, violence and/or the threat of violence preventing people’s free movement around the world, Emma Goldman’s ‘Patriotism: A Menace to Liberty’, and punk rock music and social change.

We’re back for a short one where we do a wrap up of the G20 and some of the protests against it. These protests raised issues that were left out of the G20 agenda, which mainly focused on economic growth. We discuss Tony Abbott’s “inspiring” speech, featuring a MLK moment. There’s also a mention of Obama, US imperialism and drones.

There were a number of creative environmental protests during the G20, which was fitting as there was unusually hot weather during the meeting. Protesters buried their heads in the sand to mock the Abbott government’s stance on climate change. The “climate guardians” (pictured above) dressed as angels to raise awareness of the importance of taking action on climate change. We play an interview with one of the climate guardians, Deborah Hart from Climacts. This interview is from Indymedia on RTR92.1FM and she is interviewed by Alex Whisson and Ray Grenfeld.

The episode also features a discussion on some criticisms of the widespread criticism of Russell Brand from mainstream journalists. You can hear further discussion on the G20 and protests against it on our 74th episode.

On this episode we take aim at FIFA and the human rights abuses associated with the World Cup. We discuss the $11 billion spent on the tournament by the Brazilian government, at the expense of much needed government services. We also mention that thousands of people have been evicted from their homes and sex workers have been pushed out of the city. We play an interview with a member of the Comité Popular da Copa in Sao Paulo, a coordination of groups and individuals against the FIFA World Cup and its negative effects. This interview is thanks to Anarchist Radio Berlin and we encourage people to listen to the entire interview here (we play a shortened version). We also mention that gay players have been encouraged to come out at the World Cup, as well as discussing nationalism and militarism in ice-hockey, pointing out that Nick is so normcore he doesn’t even have to try, and giving shout outs to the Queer Punx and the Angry Hippie.
