She discusses her play ‘Handle It’ and its feminist themes, art and social change, nude photos of Jennifer Lawrence being shared without her consent, the feminist campaign against sexist “pick up artist” Julien Blanc, and Tracy Spicer’s Ted Talk ‘The Lady Stripped Bare’. We’re joined by awesome independent journalist Antony Loewenstein (@antloewenstein). He discusses Australian troops set to enter Iraq and Syria, his article ‘Of course Australia is going back to Iraq: That’s how a US client is expected to behave’, hysteria about terrorism in Australia and the poor state of (most of) the Australian media. We also draw on The Hunger Games to question whether this truly is a “humanitarian” mission, especially after Australia recently cut all foreign aid to Iraq. We discuss the reactions to the military intervention from different states at the UN security council and the need for UN reform. We also analyse whether the proposed air strikes are terrorism, according to s1 of the UK Terrorism Act.

Other issues covered on the episode are: Thai people read George Orwell’s book 1984 in public (as a form of protest against the dictatorship), “biological” sex as a social construct, and another direct action in Melbourne – this time activists take on Lockheed Martin. We’re joined by Jen Perry, one of the main organisers of the Cruelty Free Festival WA, for this entire episode. We discuss this festival and how it puts into practice our support for intersectionality – bringing together a wide range of human rights, environmental and animal rights causes. We also discuss the recent protests against shark culling and linking opposition to the shark cull to a broader animal rights philosophy, The Sistah Vegan Project, avoiding gender stereotypes when discussing attitudes towards animals (Jen is no “cow hugger”!), critiques of term ‘cruelty-free’, and why all progressives should go to Berlin and the ICAS Oceania conference. In this one we discuss our experiences at our local One Billion Rising event – we promoted this global event on our last episode. We bring you some of the talks from this event, including Lesley Kirkwood – Managing Solicitor of The Women’s Law Centre of WA and Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren. We reflect on the intersectional nature of the event, the importance of trigger warnings and a flyer we got at the event – 10 Things Men can do to Prevent Gender Violence. We use this flyer to discuss how to be a good feminist ally (and how to be a good ally of any cause where you are not part of the oppressed group). We start off the episode with our latest ‘Find from the street’ and we also speak out against slut shaming, discuss some feedback on our show, and mention the TV show What Would You Do and the Indymedia radio show that we sometimes co-host, which you can subscribe to on iTunes.
