Dear White People

Katie is back for this episode and we discuss the Netflix show Dear White People, as well as ethical sneakers and ethical travel. Katie recommends Newton sneakers for the most ethical option if you’re buying new sneakers – according to Shop Ethical. Although since Katie bought these, she found an even better option – fair trade sneakers at Vegan Wares.

We also bring you some of the talks from the Community as Activism event that we discussed on episode 211, including Leah Avene on privilege, Beth Allan on challenging sexism in animal advocacy and Quinn Eades on imagining the future we want to create. Audio of this entire event is online – you can listen to the session with Leah and Quinn ‘Building Community – Lessons from a Range of Movements’, the session with Beth ‘Transformative Justice and Me Too’ and also the session ‘Intersectionality In Practice’ – featuring Nick and others.

Some of the other things touched on throughout the episode are: the movie BlacKkKlansman, Will Potter and Ward Churchill on state repression of activists, Nick’s article on different factions within the civil rights movement, Revolutionary Left Radio on the Black Panther Party, hip hop etc, and our take on the anti-psychiatry movement/concept.

Sam Castro

Sam Castro.

You can listen to this episode above and subscribe to our podcast on iTunes. You can also listen to this episode on StitcherCyber Ears or download it on Archive.org (55mins, 44MB).

This episode features a talk from activist Sam Castro on challenging sexism within progressive movements and creating system change. This talk was recorded at the 2018 Students of Sustainability conference in Melbourne. Sam is an activist with Friends of the Earth and WACA, and has been on our podcast all the way back on episode 65, discussing direct action.

Some of the points that came up in Sam’s workshop that we have covered on previous episodes are call in versus call out culture and Men of Colour being more likely to be called out for sexism. We also covered the #MeToo movement on episode 191.

If you’d like to join in discussions on this topic and others, we encourage you to join us at the upcoming forum ‘Community as Activism: Building Community within the Animal Liberation Movement and Beyond’ by the Institute for Critical Animal Studies (ICAS) Oceania. This free event will feature sessions on transformative justice and #MeToo, as well as intersectionality in practice and building community. It will be held on Saturday 4 August, 1-5pm at Library at the Dock (107 Victoria Harbour Promenade, Docklands) – in Melbourne.

This episode also features a little bit of Adam Cardilini’s talk on the environmental impact of animal agriculture. This is from the workshop ‘Achieving Environmental Liberation Through Animal Liberation’ which Adam ran with Nick, also at the Students of Sustainability conference. You can listen to both of our talks from this workshop here and view Adam’s PowerPoint here and below. We also covered the environmental impact of animal agriculture on episode 171.

You can listen to this episode above and subscribe to our podcast on iTunes. You can also listen to this episode on StitcherCyber Ears or download it on Archive.org (35mins, 28MB).

As with our last Social Justice Warrior Happy Hour, on this one we cover a wide range of topics. We start off by giving a recap of the Invasion Day rally in Melbourne, which we promoted on episode 198. You can listen to our recording of a talk from the rally by historian Gary Foley and also check out our 199th episode for discussion on different approaches to Aboriginal activism in Australia.

We also mention Nick’s article ‘Ford’s Attempts to Moderate the CORE of the Civil Rights Movement’, inspired by a recent episode of the podcast Revolutionary Left Radio on the Black Panther Party. There’s a return of the segment ‘Angela Davis ALWAYS Makes Sense’, this time on the Black Panther Party.

The government repression of GetUp! and right-wing conspiracy theories about GetUp! is another topic covered.

We finish the episode by discussing vegans hijacking the #Februdairy campaign from the dairy industry, feminism and dairy, and the Be Fair Be Vegan ad campaign.

We’re over half way towards our Crowd Funding goal – please help us reach our full goal here. Those donating $10 or more can choose which topics we cover on the show this year 🙂

On this episode we give our take on the #metoo campaign and get onto a number of other related issues, such as gender and domestic violence.

We also discuss some solutions to the issues highlighted by the #metoo campaign, including bringing in Marxist perspectives from Alyx Gorman and Helen Razer from the event ‘On Your Marx’.

Other stuff covered on the episode is ‘Harry Potter fan gets blocked by J.K. Rowling after asking Johnny Depp question‘ and the wage penalty for motherhood but the opposite for fathers.
