This episode features a voicemail from Luc from Team Earthling animal rights podcast, on metadata and new laws restricting privacy rights in Australia. We also rant about the current government, drawing on a newsletter we got from Liberal MP Steve Irons. We take aim at the government’s new policies towards asylum seekers, encourage people to contact Immigration Minister Scott Morrison about them, as well as promoting the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre’s campaigns and information on these issues. Politician Andrew Wilkie has started a campaign of his own – he wants to take the current government to the International Criminal Court over their treatment of asylum seekers.

We close the episode with a discussion on animal rights. This includes talking about some of the problems with eggs (including “humane” eggs), replacing eggs in cooking etc, and recipes for vegan corn fritters and omelettes. There’s also discussion on The Melbourne Cup horse race, a cartoon pointing out the similarities between the horse racing industry and the dairy industry, and Nick’s article linking opposition to the Melbourne Cup to a broader philosophy of animal rights. This time Nick is joined by Coggo from the Melbourne Street Medic Collective (Melb SMC) for the entire episode. Melb SMC and many other groups formed the Wage Peace Convoy that broke the world record for most protests in one day. Unfortunately Guinness refused to include them, maybe because they’re too busy reporting on really important records like the most business leaders attending a networking event. The Wage Peace Convoy did an amazing 29 protests on the day. One of these was with The First Nation people of Australia, where they demanded that those Indigenous people who perished in the Frontier Wars of Australia’s genesis be remembered at the Canberra War Memorial. The other 28 were aimed at those profiting from, and advocating for, war. Nick and Coggo also discuss: the anti-budget protests in Melbourne, updates on the tunnel picket actions for rail not roads, and the impact of the use of horses by police – both on the horses themselves and protesters.

We’re joined by Jen Perry, one of the main organisers of the Cruelty Free Festival WA, for this entire episode. We discuss this festival and how it puts into practice our support for intersectionality – bringing together a wide range of human rights, environmental and animal rights causes. We also discuss the recent protests against shark culling and linking opposition to the shark cull to a broader animal rights philosophy, The Sistah Vegan Project, avoiding gender stereotypes when discussing attitudes towards animals (Jen is no “cow hugger”!), critiques of term ‘cruelty-free’, and why all progressives should go to Berlin and the ICAS Oceania conference. We have an interview with Andrew Kelly on the #tunnelpicket protest movement against a new road development in Melbourne that will destroy communities and privilege road travel over public transport.
