On this episode we discuss the recommendations that came out of the Banking Royal Commission. We also discuss the shared views on economic issues amongst the different factions within the Liberal party.

We also cover a challenge to the government’s “Robo-Debt” where they try and get money out of people receiving welfare benefits without sufficient evidence. Check out our 157th episode for more on this issue. Also check out fakejustice.net for more on how the law is applied very unequally to different groups.

We finish the episode by discussing Nick’s article ‘Solidarity and Intersectionality at Invasion Day Narrm (Melbourne)’. We promoted this protest last episode #220.

This time Nick is joined by Vanessa, a forensic psychology doctoral student and one of the hosts of VeganSci podcast. We discuss animal activism and Vanessa’s experiences with working in prisons. Vanessa also raises the issue of prisoners working in slaughterhouses as part of their rehabilitation. This is despite the psychological harm that slaughterhouse work does to the workers and the communities in which they live. Check out Nick’s interview with an Australian slaughterhouse worker and the journal article ‘Routinized killing of animals: Going beyond dirty work and prestige to understand the well-being of slaughterhouse workers’ for more on this.

We also discuss a recent silent protest against the dairy industry that we were both involved in.

Vanessa also covers how she has cut her shopping budget in half since she has gone vegan. For more on this, you can hear Nick and Katie’s discussion on living vegan on a low income here and below.

Nick also briefly touches on some current events and updates including: Invasion Day rallies 2017, our (old) episode on Invasion Day, Chelsea Manning free 17 May, Centrelink whistle blower, prison privatisation in Australia and pedestrian deaths in Melbourne.

On this episode we cover a wide range of topics. We discuss protests against the destructive Roe 8 highway development in Perth. We also discuss Edward Snowden; the documentary Citizen Four; the movie Snowden; Obama’s failings on surveillance, whistleblowers and other issues; and the Signal app and PureVPN for secure communication. On this episode, Nick is joined by his brother Liam, one of the many victims of Centrelink’s new compliance system. This new computer system used by Australia’s welfare/social security system is issuing 20,000 debt notices a week, which is not only affecting vulnerable people, but many of these notices are incorrect in their claim that people under-reported their income while on Centrelink.

If you’ve received a false debt letter from Centrelink, you’re not alone – visit notmydebt.com.au and share your story. Also check out #NotMyDebt on Twitter for more stories and information on the issue.

In some Trump-related news, we discuss Jason Brownlee’s article ‘Trump gives no reason to believe U.S. nation-building will end on Jan. 20’ (a topic we discussed with Jason on episode 146) and Amnesty’s International’s petition calling for Obama to take his last chance to leave a lasting human rights legacy. Check out Ward Churchill’s spoken word CD ‘In A Pig’s Eye: Reflections on the Police State, Repression and Native America’ for more on Native American activist Leonard Peltier’s case, which is referred to in Amnesty’s petition.
