This episode features Adam Cardilini’s talk ‘Diversity in animal activism: Preparing for impact opportunities for the next 10 years’. This talk was recorded at the 2016 ICAS Oceania conference – see the show notes for episode 152 for links to the audio of all of the talks from this conference. Nick and Adam also discuss effective animal activism and question whether the evidence actually suggests animal advocates should avoid promoting veganism. In this discussion we cover Faunalytics recommendations for activism based on their study on former vegetarians and vegans. We point to other research suggesting that people who became vegetarian for ethical reasons and specifically for animal rights reasons were more likely to stay vegetarian than those who made the decision based on other reasons, such as concern for their health. We also mention the study ‘A Pound of Flesh’ and give a “public health announcement” regarding the importance of B12 for vegans.

On this episode we’re joined by Kadri Aavik, a sociologist, as well as a feminist and animal liberation activist. She discusses her article ‘Challenging Sexism while Supporting Speciesism: The Views of Estonian Feminist on Animal Liberation and Its Links to Feminism’, which she co-wrote with Dagmar Kase and published in the Journal for Critical Animal Studies (pages 92-107). Throughout the discussion we touch on links between sexism and animal exploitation – including mentioning the work of Carol Adams. Jess Ison’s talk on Animals Australia’s ‘No Way To Treat a Lady’ campaign includes an analysis of the contribution Adams has made to this field (embedded below).

Also covered throughout the episode is: the importance of animal advocates providing people with practical advice on living vegan (such as our website veganperth.org.au), the Australian government has recognised that the vegan diet is a viable option for all Australians – though the Estonian government doesn’t feel the same way, and we have a further discussion on the issue of population.

Nick is joined by Sarah Ross from the Refugee Rights Action Network and Kaliyugan Pathmanathan, Project Coordinator of Tamil Eelam Cricket. Cali had to leave Sri Lanka as a refugee to Australia himself and he co-founded this project in order to create a platform for the Tamil diaspora around the world to participate in national and international cricket competitions and also to bridge the gap between newly arrived Tamils in the local community and the pre-existing Tamil community.

We also discuss the importance of the voices of refugees in the movement for refugees, strategies for effective refugee activism and who is to blame for harsh policies towards asylum seekers?

Cali and Sarah also give some critiques of the counter movement against Reclaim Australia.
