This episode covers Idle No More – the exciting new movement for Indigenous sovereignty and the environment. We cover the beginnings of the movement, Democracy Now!’s coverage, Idle No More and anti-consumerism, Chief Theresa Spence’s hunger strike, flash mobs including one in North Bay, Ontario – you can watch this one here (short version) or here (long version), comparisons with the Occupy movement, and the movement spreading around the world – including Alaska (U.S.A.). We play an awesome voicemail from Jon who discusses links between the Idle No More movement and Indigenous protests in Aotearoa (New Zealand) – where he’s from, who gets to define Indigenous and a shared history of oppression amongst Indigenous people all around the world. See below under ‘Clips’ for more sources from Jon on Idle No More and Indigenous issues generally.

We also have a return of the segment ‘What you HAVEN’T learnt from the media this week’, where we cover an “important” story from the Herald Sun on an incident on Twitter. Other topics covered are: the latest episode of The Unconventionist, our 2012 report on how many people visited our website and where they were from etc, Team Earthling animal rights podcast, The Traveling Vegan which has vegan recipes and product reviews, Katie’s article on ethical rings, and climate change denial and shitty media coverage continues despite Australia’s heat wave.
