Harley McDonald-Eckersall and Dilan Fernando discuss what you can do to help Palestine, based on conversations they had with Palestinian people on their recent visit to the country. They focus on supporting the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement and correcting myths about Palestine. Check out our last episode #226 to hear more about these myths and responses to them from Dilan and Harley.

Also covered regarding Palestine is: recent bombings, the academic article ‘´Etat de si`ege: A dying domesticating colonialism?’ By Ghassan Hage, John Pilger’s documentary Palestine is still the issue, connections between veganism and the BDS movement as both involve a political consumer boycott, the film clip for the song ‘Close Your Eyes (And Count to F**k)’ that highlights more subtle police racism in the USA, and the Palestine Animal League. You can hear Harley and Dilan discuss the Palestine Animal League and animal advocacy under Occupation in Palestine on Freedom of Species.

Finally, Nick has written two articles on the recent coup attempt in Venezuela: ‘Cheerleading for the Coup: An Analysis of Media Coverage of Venezuelan Politics’ and ‘Hoping For More Prayers Rather Than Bombs: A Response to Donald Trump’s Comments on Venezuela’. Dilan Fernando and Harley McDonald-Eckersall discuss their recent trip to Palestine where they spoke with local activists about life under Occupation and the history of Palestine.

We also cover some recent developments including Netanyahu’s re-election in Israel and the anti-Palestine position of both of the two most popular candidates, plus West Australian Labor candidate Melissa Parke withdrawing her candidacy due to her pro-Palestine, pro-human rights comments being made public.

This episode features Harley McDonald-Eckersall and Dilan Fernando who were a part of the recent Dominion Animal Liberation disruption that occurred in Melbourne. There were also other actions around Australia.

They discuss this action and the importance of disruption as a tactic in the animal liberation movement and beyond. You can read an article from Harley and Dilan defending this action against criticism, published on our blog. You can also watch the documentary Dominion here.

We also discuss the March to Close All Slaughterhouses Melbourne, which took place just a couple of days before the Dominion disruption. You can read our recap of the march here.

For more on activist tactics and the importance of disruption in protest more generally, check out This is an Uprising; Gene Sharp’s work – text, Youtube; and feminist writer Naomi Wolf on “fake protest”. We played some of this talk and discussed it all the way back on our 27th episode.

For more from all of us on animal activism, check out our radio show and podcast Freedom of Species!
