Nick is joined by Roger Yates – a sociologist, activist with The Vegan Information Project and host of The Animal Rights Show. They discuss the utopian animal rights mockumentary Carnage and The Game Changers Netflix documentary, on athletes eating a plant-based diet.

Other topics discussed include: animal rights versus animal welfare, language and social justice, and sociology versus psychology. This episode is a continuation of a discussion between Roger and Nick over on Freedom of Species, which you can listen to here.

We finish the show by discussing the Black Lives Matter protests in the US, the radical flank effect, and parallels with police racism in Australia and media coverage of the Dominion Animal Liberation disruption.

We are joined by Tom McIntyre who discusses his personal experiences of raising his daughter Isabelle, who has cerebral palsy. More specifically, we cover: disabilities and intersectionality; neoliberalism and disability funding; policies affecting people with disabilities, including the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme); a lack of focus on disabilities in progressive movements; avoiding ableist language; and activism as a privilege?

This episode features Katie’s talk ‘Getting Trigger Happy With Trigger Warnings. Mental Health, (dis)ability And Activism’. This talk was given at the most recent Institute for Critical Animal Studies Oceania conference – see the notes for our 108th episode for links to all of the talks from that conference.

This talk is relevant on an on-going basis but we were particularly inspired to put it out on an episode in light of recent comments by Stephen Fry, which criticised trigger warnings, as well as accusing victims of abuse of ‘self-pity’. He has since apologised for (some of) the comments.

Also covered throughout the episode is: content warnings, trigger warnings and free speech, as well as research that (apparently) shows that trigger warnings are counter-productive – we disagree!
