With coronavirus restrictions easing across Australia, we argue that the aim should not be to return to normal, but rather to create a different society that addresses the inequalities and hardships that existed well before the pandemic.

I don't want to go back to the old normal, it was horrible. I like the new one where people give more than two shits about other people and adopt animals and spend time with their loved ones. I want a different normal where essential workers are respected and have a living wage.

We also discuss US politics and make a similar case against going back to normal post-Trump, highlighting the need to tackle ongoing problems with health care, the environment and class inequality.

Joe Biden thinks we should "return to normal."

Normal means 87 million uninsured or underinsured.

Normal means fossil fuel companies destroying the planet.

Normal means the rich getting richer while the poor get poorer.
